Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra & Bing Crosby On The Radio

Here's a cool shot of Dean Martin with his pallies Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. These three look like they are having a great time on the radio.

P.S. My pallie Dave over at his wonderful blog Planet Mondo has a really cool post you should check out. This week's edition of his regular feature Funky Friday is dubbed Cocktail Shakers. As the 60's were ending and the 70's were beginning, many of the singers who did lounge and cocktail music wanted to try to stay relevant. They covered popular songs of the day to try to be cool and hip for a new crowd. I think the results can be quite enjoyable. For example, I really dig hearing Peggy Lee cover Everyday People. It's neat to hear Vegas era singers do their own takes on the socially conscious music of the Vietnam era. I hope you'll check out this blog post and leave some comments for Dave there. Thanks. Cheers!

  1. Thanks for the shout Keith - I've got a few more of these goodies lined up for future use - great pic, have you ever heard the Bing recording session out-take where mid-song he sings which bastard changed the lyrics - or something similar?

  2. Hey Dave. You are very welcome. I was happy to do it. Those are some really cool tunes you posted over there. I'm glad you like that pic. I thought it was a pretty neat one. No, I hadn't heard that one of Bing saying that. It would be quite hilarious to hear it.

  3. Neat picture Keith.

I used to like it when they would all get together and work and kid around.

    Thanks for posting it Keith.

  4. Hey Glenn. I know what you mean. Plus it was cool that Dino got to work with his idol Bing. All three of these guys are awesome in my book.

  7. I like Bing too. One of my favourite movies is High Society with Bing, Frank and the lovely Grace Kelly. Pity Dino didn't do some numbers in the movie as well.

    Great picture Keith!

  9. I will have to check out Planet Mondo's post. Some of the loungers did well reaching a new generation (Sammy Davis Jr.) while others were abysmal failures (Jack Jones did the Love Boat theme, and that was it). Tony Bennett had a horrible album trying to be "hip", but managed to regain fame when he stayed true to his roots. It's an interesting subject for sure.

  10. Hey Gilligan. Thanks. Planet Mondo is one of my favorite blogs. Of course, Retrospace is as well. I thought that some of the loungers, especially like Sammy, were able to make that transition to reach a new crowd of fans. Others were disasters, which then looked anything but cool and hip. Many loungers over the years went back to their roots, especially as younger generations fell for their music. Tony Bennett is a perfect example. Have a good weekend. Cheers!

  11. Love this shot! I believe this was not for the radio but for their studio recordings when they recorded "style".

  13. great site, just happened upon it looking for frank/jobim info -- the bing song is "wrap your troubles in dreams (and dream your troubles away)" on the box set bing: his legendary years. it's pretty funny and caught me by surprise the first time i heard it because he doesn't miss a beat and just starts making up lyrics to finish the song, rhyming "cut" with "...holy christ i'm going off my nut."
