Thanks go to my pallie DMP for bringing this Johnny Depp as Dean Martin story to my attention at his ilovedinomartin blog.
From The Celebrity News Examiner:
Will Johnny Depp be tapped to play Dean Martin in a biopic of his life? Martin's daughter Deana reveals that Depp was her top choice to portray late singer Martin in a movie.Deana acknowledged that a film is in the works, and will be directed by Joe Mantegna and written by comedian and actress Bonnie Hunt. Deana was speaking as a guest on a Boston radio program when she said, "[Depp] is a tremendous actor, he has that charm, that swagger, and the resemblance of my father is there. I’m sure he would do the role justice!”
Deana recently released a book called Memories Are Made of This, Dean Martin Through His Daughter’s Eyes and is a singer in her own right with a CD titled "Volare."
From Deadline Hollywood Daily:
Director Marty Scorsese may want Leonardo DiCaprio for the coming biopic about Frank Sinatra. (Just as Marty wanted Leo for Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, and soon Shutter Island.) But I hear Universal's first choice to fill the role may be Johnny Depp. The studio is thrilled with his performance in this summer's forthcoming Public Enemies and very much wants to stay in the Johnny Depp business. Besides, it's already been determined that the lead actor playing Sinatra won't be singing. The movie will feature Sinatra's own recordings thanks to a deal with Frank Sinatra Enterprises, guaranteeing the participation of the Sinatra estate and Warner Music Group. Besides, Scorsese and Depp have never worked together: that alone could be reason enough to see this pic.
So Deanna Martin wants Johnny Depp to play her father Dean Martin. Universal wants Johnny Depp to play Frank Sinatra. I guess Depp is in high demand. So what do you think of these possibilities? Would you want to see him play either Dino or Frank, or possibly even both of them? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
I think Johnny would be great in either, he's shown he can be so versatile as an actor (lucky for him, since that's his job)and would put his all into it.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I like Johnny. I'd see either movie. I'm sure he would do a good job. I had always figured George Clooney would play Dean Martin, but I'd rather Johnny than a lot of other actors.
ReplyDeleteI love Johnny. He's great at anything he does. I'm sure he would do a great job playing either role. That said I'm not sure he would have been my top choice for either.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phoebe. I appreciate you offering your feedback on this. I guess we'll have to wait and see if all of this is talk or not. Who really knows.
ReplyDeleteI think Depp would do a good job playing either, but I can picture him playing Dean Martin more.
ReplyDeleteJohnny Depp is an amazing actor in every role I see him casted in =]
ReplyDeleteI would love to see him in any movie regardless =]

I would love to see Depp play Frank Sinatra! I think he is one of the very few remaining actors in Hollywood who is capable of recreating a legend on the screen knowing Depp's track record as an actor!
ReplyDeleteI like Johnny and I agree Dustjacket attic. Great choice!
ReplyDeleteX♥X♥
i am a fervent johnny depp fan and i think he would do justice to dean martin's story-- he is just this incredible actor with a lot of clout. i can't wait for them to release it if ever!
ReplyDeletemuch love

In my book Johnny can do what ever he want's.....He certainly has the dark charm BUT to play some one like Mr Martin would be a task in it's self you can portray them but you will never be like them....
ReplyDeleteI don't know, Keith. I see Depp more as Frank than as Dean. Dean requires more of a George Clooney type.
ReplyDeleteFabulous photos! Depp would be perfect in the role ~ he is so versatile!

Johnny seems like a good choice for either, I would not like seeing him play both. Leonardo and George are good actors also. Shia LaBeouf's fame also seems to be on the rise and he does some good work. Whoever gets the part(s) they would probably have to be able to sing, right?
ReplyDeleteHey Rev. Thanks. I think he could pull either off, but I would rather see him play Dino. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteHey Michael. Thanks. He is a fine actor. He really throws himself into any role. I'm sure he would do a good job in either part.
ReplyDeleteHey Mirko. Thanks. It would be cool to see him as Sinatra. It will be interesting to see if he does either of these movies. I'd be intrigued to see his take on either man.
ReplyDeleteHey Janet. Thanks. He is a good actor. He also would definitely help put butts in seats.
ReplyDeleteHey Eden. Thanks. Glad to see you're such a Depp fan. He is awesome. I think he would do a good job. I wouldn't mind it if he was cast as Dean Martin. We'll see what happens.
ReplyDeleteHey Gingey. Thanks. Johnny is a good actor. I think it's going to be hard for any actor to play Dino. I don't know if they can capture the essence and magic of him or not. I guess we'll see.
ReplyDeleteHey Bruce. Thanks. I know what you mean. George Clooney is the man I always imagined playing Dino. If Johnny plays him, I'd still see the movie.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carrie for your feedback. I do think Johnny would do a good job. I'd rather see him than many others in the role.
ReplyDeleteThere was story years back (late seventies) Bowie was lined up to play Frank..
ReplyDeleteHey Dave. Really? Wow. I never knew that about Bowie. That would definitely have been an interesting choice.
ReplyDeleteActually...not bad choice! I would love to see Johnny Depp in this role...
ReplyDeleteHope your week starts great! :)

Hey Sandra. Thanks. If they are going to have a big Hollywood star in the role, there's not many others I can think of I'd rather see tackle it. Cheers!
ReplyDelete:O That is so, so amazing. I'd love to see him playing either! So glad that they want the original recordings for songs, it would be pretty lame otherwise lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge Johnny Depp fan, and think that since he puts a lot of thought into the parts that he plays, and has said he needs to really feel passionately about a role, that he would do a great job with either role! :)
ReplyDeleteIt would be amazing to see him in that role. He's definitely one of my favorite actors... :)
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine Depp playing either one of them really. i think they need to look a little deeper.
ReplyDeletei think he can get into the character.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Clooney would be much better.. He has body type, looks and charm! I have trouble looking at Johnny and seeing Dean :S Maybe Frank, but not Dean!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dapper. Great hearing from you. I am intrigued to see him play either role. I am glad that they will use the actual original recordings. That's what I prefer.
ReplyDeleteThanks Allison. He is an amazing actor. I've been a big fan of his since 21 Jump Street. He does really get involved in a role so I'm sure he would do a fantastic job playing either role.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gabbi. Glad to see you're a fan. Hopefully this will actually happen.
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy. I am definitely surprised that his name was brought up. Even if he does either part, I wish him the best. I would have rather George Clooney play Dino, but I guess we'll see.
ReplyDeleteThanks Savy. Great hearing from you.
ReplyDeleteHey Maria. Thanks. George is the man I would rather play Dean Martin. That's what I've thought for a long time I would like George to remake those Matt Helm movies. I would probably prefer Johnny as Frank, but I'll still watch the Dino movie. Heck, he'll be better than probably a lot of guys we could get stuck with.
ReplyDeletePersoally, I say kill me now to what amounts to stunt casting as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone would turn Johnny Depp down for any movie part - he's sure to help 'open' a picture - but that doesn't mean he's right for the part.
Personally, I think Public Enemies would have been a better film if Depp and Bales had taken the opposite roles.
Hey Paul. Thanks for your feedback. It was great hearing from you. There are worse choices than Depp to play either part. He might do a good job. I'm not sure. There are others I could see more in the roles. I guess we'll see what happens. He can open a movie so that might bring in people who might not otherwise have seen either movie. I know what you mean about that doesn't mean he's right for the part.
ReplyDeletewould be cool :o]
ReplyDeleteThanks Terence.
ReplyDeleteJeez ...This information seems to have stirred up a lot of opinions.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Johnny Depp would have been my first choice...But after thoughtful consideration, I think it might work. He is a phenomenal actor. And very versatile. It could work !
Thanks Keith !
Hey Mary. Thanks. Yeah, I knew this news would definitely spark some opinions from people. He wouldn't be my first choice, but I think he can pull it off. Heck, I wouldn't have excepted Jamie Foxx to do so well as Ray Charles.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I feel about him playing *either*! I mean, he's...Johnny Depp. He's good at bizarre, Burton-y roles...not swanky crooners. Ehhh, I'm sure there's a better pick out there, like Clooney.
ReplyDeleteAnd PS: Bonnie Hunt. Really?! Dear. Lord.
I think that Johnny Depp could play anyone. he is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI feel he could pull off either role, but I see him as Dean a bit more. They both have a certain sort of alluring je ne sais quoi that is hard to find and even hard to pinpoint, which I think would make it very easy (or at least natural) for JD to slip into DM's shoes.
ReplyDeleteHave an awesome day, Keith!
♥ Jessica
Hey Kim. Thanks for the feedback. He does usually play strange roles. This will definitely be different. I'm hoping he'll do a good job if this happens. He's not my first choice. I was wondering myself why they would hire Bonnie Hunt for this.
ReplyDeleteHey Chessa. Thanks. He is very talented.
ReplyDeleteHey Jessica. Thanks. It was cool to read your opinion on this. I'm going to watch either movie anyway. I do hope it's someone playing the role that I can get behind. I'm cautiously optimistic about him.
ReplyDeleteI love Johnny! And I had a great time during my buying trip. Hectic, exhausting but still exhilarating. Hope you had a great week so far :)
ReplyDeleteThanks R.A. Glad to see you're a fan of Johnny. That's great that you had a good time. I hope you get a chance to rest and relax this weekend. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteWhether it's Depp or DiCaprio playing Frank--both have their good points for the role--what I'm most excited about is Martin Scorsese as director. The level of detail, insight, and intensity that he could bring to the project will be unparalleled. Think of all the relevant movies he's made: MEAN STREETS, GOODFELLAS, NEW YORK NEW YORK, and CASINO. It would be a biopic like no other!
ReplyDeleteHey Will. Thanks for the feedback. It was great hearing from you. I agree with you on Scorsese. He's an amazing filmmaker. I know he will do a fantastic job with the Sinatra pic. I'm glad it's in his hands. Take care. Have a great weekend. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI don't really want Johnny to play Sinatra nor Martin. Yes, he can be wonderful in the role, but I think, there are tens of better choices. I believe that Robert Downey Jr would make perfect Dino. Kevin Spacey would be amazing Frank, but he already played Bobby Darin before. However, I'm going to see it anyway, Scorsese is one of my favorite directors although I like more his movies from the 70s to 90s with De Niro than the latest ones with Leo DiCaprio. I hope (and know), he'll do a good job.
ReplyDeleteHey Kristyna. Great feedback. It was nice hearing from you. There are actors I would rather see play either role than Depp. I like him. I'm sure he'll do a good job. There could be a lot worse choices than him too. I like your suggestions on actors. I could see those. I do agree with you on Scorcese. I like his movies of today, but I really love what he did in the past.
ReplyDeleteI love Johnny Depp he is great in every movie and an amazing actor but I can't see him as Dean or Frank but certainly not as Dean maybe he can pull off Frank ( I still highly doubt it) but never Dean Martin.
ReplyDeleteHey Mel. Thanks. I was really wanting to hear your feedback on this. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on it.
