Nosferatu Is Such A Classic Silent Film
One of my favorite vampire movies of all time is Nosferatu. The German silent film was released in 1922. They did not have the rights to Dracula by Bram Stoker. That did not, however, stop them from making their own authorized adaptation of the vampire tale. They just changed the names of certain characters. The leading vampire, played by Max Schreck, was called Count Orlok instead of Count Dracula.
I've always had a special place in my heart for silent films. This is definitely one of my favorites. It's so eerie and creepy. It's definitely the kind of movie that's great to watch late at night. One thing I love about this movie is the look of the vampire. They didn't try to make him sexy and seductive. He is a monster pure and simple. They weren't trying to have people gush and swoon all over him. They wanted people to be terrified of this bloodsucking creature.
Anybody here ever see this film? What is your take on it? If you have not seen it, I did include a link to the entire film up above if you want to watch it.
I'm also posting a couple of clips. The first one is clips from the film. The second one is by a goth band called Nosferatu. Their Haunting video features scenes from the movie. I hope you enjoy these.
hun, tell me your email from gmail can i add on msn?
ReplyDeletei love your posts
kisses
I like this, great post. I'm gonna see where I can watch the full film.
ReplyDeleteNosferatu is a creepy classic. I watched it for the first time with my sister recently and absolutely fell in love with it. What makes it work is that they didn't sex up the vampire. Count Orlok was a pure monster... I loved that about this movie.
ReplyDeletegood morning, keith!
ReplyDeletei haven't watched that movie yet since
i don't like watching scary movies.
huh! i could hardly sleep at night after
i watched horror movies.huh!
I prefer the Klaus Kinski remake but do you remember Mr Barlow, the Nosferatu lookalike from Salem's Lot. Have a peep
ReplyDeleteI never saw the silent film, but I did see this done as a play. It was in an old rundown barn of a theater, just before Halloween, several years ago. It was a great performance.
ReplyDeleteI have the Region 2 'Masters Of Cinema' DVD, which includes an excellent documentary and an informative 80 page booklet.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you payning tribute to this film which haunts you for days after each viewing. I was lucky enough to see a restored version some years back on the big screen at the London Film Festival.
Hey Fashion. My email address is on my profile. My address at gmail is coolnessistimeless. Just add @gmail.com to it.
ReplyDeleteHey Jyun. Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully that link I put in the post is the full movie.
Hey Daniela. I love silent films. I really love silent horror films. This is such a classic. I love how he was a monster. He wasn't some sexy vampire at all. I'm glad you finally saw it. I've seen this one so many times over the years.
ReplyDeleteHey Mom. Sorry that horror movies scare you. This is a really good one if you ever decide to watch one.
ReplyDeleteHey Dave. I do love the Kinski remake. I also love Salem's Lot. I love the look of Barlow in that.
Hey Bruce. That's so cool. I bet that was amazing. Never seen anything like that before. This film is a classic if you get a chance to see it.
ReplyDeleteHey Steve. Wow. That's really cool about the DVD you've got. I bet that is awesome. That is fantastic about getting to see this on the big screen. I've never had the pleasure of seeing it that way.
ReplyDeleteMan, I love this movie. It totally creeps me out. I also like that the Count is one freaking ugly monster. This certainly ain't no Twilight. I hadn't seen that video by Nosferatu in a long time. You ever had any of the box sets from Cleopatra Records?
ReplyDeleteI remember I watched this film for the first time with my dad when I was a young girl. It scared the living daylights of me.
ReplyDeleteHey Wolf. Thanks for commenting. I totally get what you mean. He was a monster pure and simple. There was nothing that was going to make you fall in love with him. He had only one thing on his mind and that wasn't sex.
ReplyDeleteHey Phoebe. I can understand that. It can be a frightening movie. Silent horror films really have that about them.
ReplyDeleteHey Wolf. I forgot to mention this. I have both Goth Box & Black Bible from Cleopatra. I've also got the videotape they did with a bunch of videos. It's got this Nosferatu video up there. I just can't watch it right now because I don't have a working VCR.
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember that one! Nosferatu, right? I always thought he's such a weird vampire when I was a kid. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Lance. Thanks for commenting. He is definitely a weird looking creature.
ReplyDeletegosh, you really know your creepy characters : )
ReplyDeleteHey Insider. Yeah, I guess I do. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'd be able to see this movie...the stills alone terrify me! :)

Always wonderful that classic "Nosferatu". I think is the best.
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks for stopping by my blog :) You have a very cool thing going on here! I'm a bit of a film junkie, especially the old ones, so I will definitely be back!
ReplyDeleteHey Leah. Thanks for commenting. You may have. This is a pretty popular silent film.

ReplyDeleteHey Dana. Thanks. Glad you're a fan of it.
ReplyDeleteHey Favourite. You are very welcome. Thanks for visiting and commenting on my blog. Glad you like it. I hope to see you again soon. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteHey Keith. You are even cooler than I thought. I had heard of those box sets, but I don't have any of those. I bet there are some really good goth songs up there. I didn't even know about that videocassette.
ReplyDeleteThanks Wolf. I appreciate that. You're cool yourself. I don't really hear many people mention Cleopatra Records. I got those box sets when they first came out at this record store that was once around here. I think I ordered the video. I once had more goth music. I was into it a lot more in the past. I do like to listen to it still now, especially if I'm in a down mood.
ReplyDeleteEverything a good horror film should hold...
ReplyDeleteHey Gingey. That is so true.

Wow, I love this movie. I think it was creepier, because it was silent. :) And it really showed that vampires are not suppose to be Fluffy like the ones of today.
ReplyDeleteI've always been to chicken to see the movie!!
ReplyDeleteBut one of these days I'll be brave and watch it!!
lululetty.blogspot.com
Max Schreck owned that role.

hey keith! thanks for the bloggy comment.
ReplyDeletei've never seen this movie but then i don't really do silent films. i do respect the fact that they portrayed the vampire as a monster...something we don't see nowadays.
anyway, cool blog. rock on pal!
Hey Drollgirl. Thanks. Glad to see you're such a big fan. I love this film myself. Bram Stoker's novel of Dracula is amazing.
ReplyDeleteHey Stephanie. Thank you. Glad you enjoyed this post. Oh yeah. I adore Catherine so much.
Hey Steph. Thanks. I think what made this movie so creepy was that it was a silent film. That added to it. He was quite a monster.
ReplyDeleteHey Maria. I hope you can get up the courage one of these days to see it. It's amazing.
Hey Scott. Thanks. You are so right about Max. Happy Halloween.
ReplyDeleteHey Dustjacket. Hope you get a chance to see this and some other silent films.
Hey Bananas. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog. Some people don't care for silent films. I don't want to just watch them, but sometimes I'm in the mood for them.
I could never get into silent scary films. I needed the sound a little more. Though it did make me more scared because i couldn't hear a thing. lol
ReplyDeleteHey Autumn. Some people just can't get into them. I always liked the idea that there was no sound. It especially added something to horror movies.
ReplyDeleteA cold shiver runs down my spine just thinking about this eerie classic film. I love it though, it's such a wonderful vampire movie.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a fantastic day!
♥ Jessica
