Meet The Most Interesting Man In The World

dos-equis

Have you guys seen those commercials from Dos Equis? They feature an older classy and suave gentleman dubbed "The Most Interesting Man In The World." The commercials are like 15 to 30 seconds long. They often feature clips from adventures this character's had throughout his lifetime. He also loves to give his words of wisdom as he sits around a table with lots of beautiful women. Each commercial ends with his line of "Stay Thirsty, My Friends."

I think it's neat that this ad campaign features an older man. Most beer ads are probably usually being targeted to younger guys. That's the market they are going after. Instead of featuring jocks, frat boys, etc., trying to pick up chicks at a club they feature this character who's like a cross between Ernest Hemingway, Hugh Hefner, James Bond, Ricardo Montalban, etc.

This character represents something that a lot of guys would love to aspire to. I know he's somebody I'd love to have a beer with as I pick his brain about how to live life to the fullest. He's lived more adventure in one lifetime than most people could even imagine. It's fascinating to see what we find out about his life in each new commercial.

I think it's cool to talk to older men about their lives. They've always got some great stories to share with us younger guys. They've seen a lot of the world, plus they've had experiences that many of us will never have. It's definitely a different generation. These men have this masculine ideal that I admire greatly. It's something that seems to be dying out in our era. It's certainly in short supply. These type of men are my role models and not what Hollywood says goes for a man today. I know I would much rather be like this character, as well as a lot of older men that I come across, than some twit like Orlando Bloom.

What's amazing too is that this character is not really a cheerleader for Dos Equis. He even talks about how he doesn't always drink beer, but when he does he prefers Dos Equis. He's almost very nonchalant about it all. The character is very cool and collect about things. These ads have become very popular since they first started debuting. I can definitely see why. More are on the way.

If you were curious to know, "The Most Interesting Man In The World" is played by actor Jonathan Goldsmith. He's 71 and has mostly done episodic work on television throughout the years. Dos Equis has even come up with
The Most Interesting Academy. Check out their website. I'm posting some of the commercials. I hope you like them. Let me know what you think.

  1. Man, this is such an awesome post. I love those commercials. He actually reminds me of my great-grandfather and my grandfather. I love my dad, but those are the two men in my life I've looked up to the most.

  2. Thanks Wolf. I'm really happy you enjoyed this post. I had a lot of fun putting it together. I had been wanting to do this for awhile. My maternal grandfather is definitely a man I admire a lot. There are others as well. I love talking to these guys. Glad you've had men in your life like that as well.

  3. I do think it's important for men to have other men as their role models. They need older men to look up to. My husband is 60. He has some nephews who don't really have a dad. He left their mother when they were very young. He's taken them under his wing. We don't have any children of our own. They've become like a part of our family.

  4. But i thought i was the most interesting man in the world!
    I'm crushed! :)

Great post, i didn't know they made more than one of those commercials.

  5. Hey Phoebe. Thank you for your response. I totally agree. There are a lot of guys who don't take that responsibility seriously. They run off and leave their kids with some sort of male example in their life. Then you've got other guys who are in their kids' lives, but don't do a great job. I didn't have a lot of great male role models when I was growing up. My dad was very verbally abusive. It definitely lead me to a lot of problems. Stuff I'm still working through. Oh well. Definitely didn't mean for my response to get all heavy. It is cool for guys to have others that they can aspire to be more like and learn more.

  6. Hey Drake. Sorry. lol I thought I was too. I guess both of us got fooled. Yeah, I've seen several of these commercials myself. The others I found online.

  7. I've never seen these commercials before. It's so nice to see something like this. I wish more guys would understand that this is the kind of man most women want. Seems it took a beer company to realize it.

I think, even though his message is for men, the commercials are more targeted towards women.

  8. I'd choose the older man everytime...After the attraction of the younger companion wears off, what else do they have to offer, theres only so far visible attraction can take you...

  15. He looks a bit like the late George Carlin. I have always been attracted to older men. Never dated younger men, and finally got it 'right' when I married a man 11 years older than I.....you are so right. Always fascinating.....

I agree on the sentiments; the man has incredible charisma. Very handsome!
Age usually adds to a man's appeal, as it shows experience and wisdom.
I have not seen these adds in Europe, thank you for sharing this.;)

  42. This is all new to my I don't know him - but can see what you mean bout Ricardo Montalban. Dos Equis is available in the UK, but hard to find. I prefer the brown-bottle version to the green.

  43. Hey Dave. I wasn't sure who had seen these commercials or not. I wasn't sure if they were seen abroad or not. I like that he does like a Latin accent in these commercials.

  46. There's something to be said about an older style of manliness--not macho-dude frat-boy meathead, but a respectable, capable, no-nonsense guy. Along with this commercial series you've also got Don Draper and Roger Sterling on MAD MEN. Love those guys. I had a "man fail" recently when I had to have my dad tie my tie in an actual Windsor knot!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hey Will. Thanks for commenting. I know what you mean. These men know what it means to be a man in all its facts. Between these commercials, Mad Men, etc., there is some revival going on for true manhood. Don't feel bad. I don't know how to tie all the different knots myself.

  48. I love these commercials! They crack me up, much like the "real men of genius," by Bud Light. I love this post! Thanks so much for commenting on my writing nightmare. I appreciate any feedback I can get. I love you blog and hope you have a great day, friend! Kori xoxo

Hey Marian. Thanks so much. Glad you liked these. They are American commercials. I'm not sure if they are airing abroad anywhere or not. I do like how they got a more mature actor to play such a character. I love the quotes myself. These commercials are awesome.

  68. Excellent post, Keith. I've admired these commercials since they first began airing, enjoying (as you pointed out) the cleverness of having him tell us (the viewers) that he doesn't always drink beer, but that when he does it's a Dos Equis. Good ad writing there, if you ask me - and also a wonderful choice for the leading man. He gives other distinguished looking older gents like Sean Connery a run for their money any day!

Thank you very much for your fantastic comments this week. I hope you're having an awesome Thursday, my friend!

  69. Hey Jessica. Thanks for commenting. I had been wanting to do a post on these commercials since I first started seeing them. I thought they find it perfectly with the theme of this blog that coolness is timeless. Men like this are timeless. They will always have people flock to them no matter what the elites in society say is "in or out."

  71. Hey Daniela. Thanks so much. I'm so thrilled you enjoy these commercials. I usually hate commercials. These always put a big smile on my face. This is the type of man I would love to be like. He's so cool and suave. He's certainly the most interesting man in the world.

  72. idk who this man is but i freakin LOVE him! lol, yahoo news did a article on who he really was. he's not near the person they portay him to be in the commericals. I love when they say "He once had an ackward moment just to have one"..lol

The commercial portrays someone who is a good role model. I love it!

  73. Hey Autumn. Thanks for commenting. I mention at the bottom of the post who he really is. This is just a character. This is not that real man. It's the character I like. He represents the type of men in the real world that I admire.
