Pierce Brosnan Brings James Bond Into The Post-Cold War 1990's

james_bond__pierce

Pierce Brosnan played the role of James Bond in four films: GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) & Die Another Day (2002). Brosnan almost played the role earlier than he did. He was approached by the Bond producers when Timothy Dalton was going to be unavailable to take over the role, after the retirement of Roger Moore, due to another movie commitment.

Brosnan was finishing up his role on the NBC series Remington Steele at the time. The publicity, however, created a buzz to revive the series from cancellation. That was unfortunate because it meant that Brosnan was not going to be able to play 007. Dalton ended up playing Bond after all. He went on to do
The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence To Kill (1989). Legal issues delayed the filming of any more Bond films for years. Frustrated with it all, Dalton stepped down from the role.

When things were finally resolved, Pierce Brosnan was now free to play the role of James Bond. Many had wondered whether the franchise could survive and thrive in the post-Cold War world. Brosnan's 007 showed that it definitely could. Each of his Bond films was very successful. He would be succeeded in the role by Daniel Craig. I've heard varying stories over whether Brosnan stepped down from the role or he was let go to make room for a younger Bond. So are you a fan of Pierce Brosnan's take on Bond? Which is your favorite Bond film of his? Which of the theme songs do you like the best? Let me know what you think?

P.S. Anybody here use Digg at all? If so, what do you think of it? I've been curious about it, but what's sure what others around here thought of it. Any feedback would be well appreciated. Thanks.

I liked the World is not enough. However, I feel Daniel Craig is a whole lot more suited to the role and notwithstanding his blond locks, his powerful look and intensity lends itself very well to the role. Dangerous, mysterious and damn sexy?!?! Hell yes.

Keith said...

Hey Anika. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it. I prefer Daniel Craig. I'm more into the cold and ruthless type of Bond. I did like Brosnan's movies. He did help revive the franchise.

i never liked james bond played by pierce brosnan.
now i love him played by daniel craig (and of course sean connery!)

Hey Kat. Thanks for commenting. Nothing wrong with that. I like him, but he's definitely not one of my favorites. I'm a Connery man.

I love Pierce Brosnan! On the plane to Africa, 'The World is not Enough' was one of the movies that I watched about 6 times (due to an 18 hour flight x2!), and I really enjoyed him as Bond =) My brother is more into the movies than I am, and he said that Brosnan is perfect (though not as good as Sean Connery!).
Hope you're having a great weekend, Keith! =)

Keith said...

Hey Allison. Thanks for commenting. I do love that film. I always thought he was a good Bond. He's not my favorite, but he did a nice job with the franchise. Connery is my favorite. Always has been and always will be. I've had a great weekend. Happy Sunday. Cheers!

I feel horrible...I've never seen one James Bond movie in my life. I always hear so much about them, but I've never actually seen one myself. Indiana Jones, however...I've seen almost all of those! :)

Die another day! and the theme song too!!! Although i have to admit that i've been into the Bond movies a little more since Daniel Craig entered the scene.

Thank you for your lovely comments on my blog Keith, it's really nice to know that someone thinks highly of it

Nothing beats Goldeneye. It was the best Bond film since Diamonds are Forever, until Casino Royale came along. Connery will always be Bond, but he did a great job in Goldeneye.

Mirko di Wallenberg said...

Before Daniel Craig I liked Pierce Brosnan very much as OO7 mostly because of his sofistication and class! Now my favorite Bond is Craig because he is a ruthless killer and gentleman at the same time! I always had difficulty to accept that from the previous incarnations of Bond but not from Craig!

Syed said...

Goldeneye has to be one of my favourite Bond movies, it just gets everything right! It is pretty much what a Bond movie should be. Hope you're having a fantastic weekend :)

Kim @ The Girl Can't Help It said...

Fun stuff as usual, Keith! To me, I think Connery is tops as Bond, but Brosnan is a close second! And dreamy. I'm sure that's what you like about him, is his deliciousness. *eye roll* :)

Talk to you soon and have a great (WARM!) sunday!

jordiegirl said...

Yes, I liked Pierce Brosnan in the role, he's very handsome. I do like James Bond with dark hair so wish Daniel Craig had dyed his for the role!! I don't think Daniel is as good looking as Pierce, think he is more craggy, macho looking. (Sorry Daniel if you read this - it's just a woman thing).

I also liked Roger Moore and Sean Connery in the role too. Didn't like George Lazenby or Timothy Dalton as much though.

Love your posts, they are always so interesting.

Goldeneye - I really enjoyed that one but I feel Pierce suffered from too much PC-ness during his time as JB. It was repeatedly reported that the producers wanted to "bring the JB character into the 90s" and make him a touchy feely new age man - which I think was a little short sighted. I mean the Connery character was wildly popular because he was a little cruel and totally un-PC. I still don't think they've quite got it with Daniel Craig either (not his fault it's the script) although they are getting there.

Great post Keith! Hope your weekend has been a good one!

Brosnan made a great Bond. Actually my favorite after Sean Connery. I especially liked Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough. Goldeneye was, IIRC, the first Bond film I ever saw, in fact.

Keith said...

Hey Erika. Thanks for being honest. I do hope you'll take a chance on Bond. There are over 20 movies in the franchise. Even if you see some of the newer ones that would be great. My favorites are the classic ones of the 60's.

Keith said...

Hey Cool Things. Thanks for commenting. Glad to see you're a fan of Bond. Daniel Craig has given some added punch to the franchise. I'm glad you've got a great weekend. That's awesome that you've had an extended one. Enjoy yourself. Cheers!

Hey Carrie. I do hope you had a wonderful birthday. I hope that all your birthday wishes come true. Glad you liked Brosnan as 007. Take care. Enjoy the week ahead. Cheers!

Hey Agneta. Thanks for commenting. I do really like PB as Bond. He's not my favorite, but I did enjoy all his movies. Take care. Cheers!

Keith said...

Hey Tommy. Thanks for your comment. I love GoldenEye. It's one of my favorite Bond films. It was the best of the ones that PB did.

Hey Mirko. Thanks. It was great hearing from you. I've enjoyed both PB and DC has 007. They each have brought something different to the role.

Keith said...

Hey Dapper. Thanks for commenting. I totally agree with you about GoldenEye. I think it's one of the best Bond films. It gets Bond totally right in my book.

Hey Kim. Thanks. Nice to hear from you. Connery is my favorite Bond. I do like Brosnan. Oh yeah. I've got such a huge crush on him. LOL Just kidding. He is a handsome fella though.

Keith said...

Hey Jordie. Thanks. Great to hear from you. PB is more classically handsome where DC is more rough around the edges. He looks like he's been in plenty of fights. There's a big difference. I do think Bond should have dark hair, but all have had different shades of hair.

Hey Stephanie. Thanks. Glad you're a fan too. Cheers!

Keith said...

Hey Sam. Thanks for commenting. You are so right. I do think that Brosnan's Bond films suffer from PC. As the Bond movies have moved into our modern times, they have definitely gotten more PC. I do think they might be moving back into the right direction, but I guess time will tell. I much prefer the classic Bond.

Hey Gema. You are so lucky!

Hey Lance. Yeah, he did play in Mars Attacks. Good movie.

Keith said...

Hey Gingey. Thanks for commenting. Hope you are doing well. Oh yeah. Connery will always be Bond to me. I like the others, but nobody measures up to him.

Hey Gypsy. Thanks. Glad you like Brosnan even if you prefer Connery. There are definitely a lot of ladies that find Brosnan attractive. He is a handsome man.

Keith said...

Hey Janet. Thanks. Craig definitely has people who love him and those who can't stand him. Don't feel bad.

Hey Ottens. Thanks for commenting I do think PB did a great job with Bond. He brought him into a new era. He carried the mantle quite well. I do wish he had done one or more movies before he left.

I love Die Another Day... But to me Sean Connery was the best Bond ever!;) But I like Pierce Brosnan in almost all his movies, specially in The Thomas Crown Affair and I like the original 2 a lot. :) All Bond actors looked great but I do not like Daniel Craig in it he has a to brutal face. To me it does not fit in the picture of Bond. By the way great post.

Hey Lore. Thanks for your comment. Cool to see you're also a Connery. He's the best. I do love Brosnan as Bond and the other movies he's done. I enjoyed both versions of the Thomas Crown Affair. Craig does have a face that's not what would be considered traditionally handsome.

Hey Niki. Thanks. Glad to see you like PB. I enjoyed all his movies. I prefer Casino Royale over Quantum of Solace. That's not one of my favorites of the franchise.

pierce. humph. he kind of bugs me, but he was alright as 007. i liked him best though in the thomas crown affair remake.

Gee Keith, that was hard. I'm still not sure which movie I liked best... soundtrack was Golden Eye, but I liked them all.

I think Pierce was great in the role for that time, he really was.

I love Craig, but the editing and story of the second Bond he was in wasn't as good as the first. They have to be real careful they don't fall into just the teenage or young male market.

thanks so much for adding DJ's to your reading list and for your great comment. Really appreciate it.
xx DJ
ps pleased you have Connery back as your profile. He's fantastic.

Of course, Connery was the best Bond ever! At least in my book. Pierce, I think, did it pretty cool too. He was a bit more sophisticated than anything. Dalton and Lazenby were okay too... But it will ALWAYS be Sean Connery who takes the cake for me.

Rachel Follett said...

He was a good James Bond but I have to say I really liked Daniel Craig!

Mondo said...

I remember seeing Pierce in some pre-Bond films. Taffin etc.. and thinking he'd make a great Bond. But was never convinced after seeing him, he's to slight and doesn't have the presence of Connery, Dalton and Daniel Craig. In all fairness, the material got progressively worse - Die Another Day is possibly the worst Bond movie ever

Hey Dustjacket. Great hearing from you. Thanks for commenting. GoldenEye is my favorite of his Bond films. I do like them all. I like their theme songs a lot. Brosnan did do a good job as Bond. He helped bring the franchise into the modern era. I prefer Craig's first Bond film. I'm not a big fan of Quantum of Solace at all. It was too short for one thing. I do hope they stop trying to copy the Bourne movies. He's Bond not Bourne. Glad you like the pic I'm using. Some people had no clue what the other one was. It came from OHMSS. I love using Connery though so I switched to a new Connery one.

Hey Daniela. Thanks for commenting. Connery will always be Bond to me. I liked Brosnan, but I thought he was a little too light hearted and soft in the role at times. He didn't seem all that tough.

Hey Rachel. Thanks. Yeah, Daniel Craig is awesome. I've got a post coming up on him soon.

Hey Dave. Thanks for sharing your take. He's not my favorite Bond. I like him. I like his movies. Die Another Day is one of my least favorite Bond films. My least favorite is actually a Connery one...Diamonds Are Forever. I do think that Connery, Dalton & Craig were/are more tougher in the role.

Keith said...

Hey Housewife. Craig is awesome. I don't blame your hubby. I've got a post on Craig coming up very soon.

Hey Zuzana. Thanks for commenting. I love The World Is Not Enough. That song is wonderful too. I love Sophie. Such a beautiful woman. One of the best of the modern Bond girls. I thought Dalton was great myself. I wish he had done more than two. He fit the role so well.

Hey Dana. Thanks. Nobody does Bond better than Connery.

Who am I kidding? I love them all!

Hope you are well dear Keith, xoxo

I loved Pierce Brosnan, then Daniel Craig became the new Bond and I was sold! However, Pierce certainly played the part perfectly. It is a shame that his Bond girls couldn't hold their own on screen (aka Denise Richards... a total embarassment)

I was glad to finally see Pierce Brosnan make his mark as James Bond. I loved him in Remington Steele, and though they stopped him from taking the part much earlier, I think that program prepared him for the role. Once he took on he role of 007, I believe that he was much more mature and ready for the part.

Can you believe I haven't seen either Daniel Craig Bond film yet? Scandalous! I'll try to catch up:0)

All of these photos are fabulous and I love this blog. It's a great place to discuss a time in Hollywood when talent was actually a prerequisite.

Have a great weekend.

Hey Cheryl Lynn. Thanks so much. I appreciate hearing from you. I'm glad you enjoy my blog. I think PB was a great Bond. I actually think it was better than it took him longer to take over the role.
