How To Tie A Necktie

Cary-Grant

Many men today have no clue how to tie a necktie. We live in a world where casual style is more accepted. Ties are not often required at many places of employment these days. If a man doesn't have to wear a tie at work, most men might only wear one at a special occasion. If some sort of event pops up that requires a man to wear a tie, but he doesn't know how to tie one, then he will have to find someone who does. That person could be his significant other, a parent, a friend or so forth. Every man should know how to properly tie a tie. There are quite a few different knots out there that a man can learn. He's off to a good start if he can master only one. That's better than having to find someone to tie a necktie for him. It's even worse if he decides to just wear a clip-on. I'll admit with shame that I'm not that great at tying a tie. I am trying to get better. I don't often get a chance to wear a tie so I've used that as an excuse to not learn many methods at all. Every classy gent should know how to tie a proper necktie. I'm doing my part to learn and also educate others in the process.

Here is a graphic that shows four of the different knots that can be used for your tie:

tie-1

I also came across quite a few videos that show how to tie a necktie.

Tying a four-in-hand knot:

Tying a bow tie:

Tying a necktie like an Italian:

There is a site called The Art of Manliness that has a great article and videos on tying various knots. You should definitely check it out. I'm learning a lot from it. This last video comes from the site. It shows how to tie several different knots.

I hope you got something out of this post. I know I did putting it together. Let me know what you think.

Sir,

I am fully of the same opinion as your good self regarding the matter of tying a necktie. Properly tying a necktie does seem to be on the wane. Thus, recently I posted a despatch in my journal entitled How To Look Smart & Stylish (Men) which included the matter of tying a necktie which I hoped might be of interest to readers. I, myself, find a half-Windsor knot, being almost symmetrical, adequate for most occasions. Well, I bid you a fine evening; I have a new despatch to construct this evening.

I remain your humble & obedient servant,

Alexander Dyle

Hi Keith, it is so interesting on the numerous ways and styles that a necktie can be tied.i love that first image! the manliness site is the coolest thing ever. It is such a shame that men are not encouraged to be as well put together as in the past,i miss that elegance.

I know there are tons of fellows out there that cant tie a tie, but it still floors me when someone tells me they can't. Thank for all the great info on the different knots, going to have to try that Italian one.

First of all, that is first picture u got there is absolutely awesome.
Funny thing, in England, school uniforms are mandatory and a lot of the uniforms have neckties (even some girl uniforms), so lots of young kids here know how to tie a tie... but i dont.
Great instructional videos. Its amazing how much you can learn from you tube. I learned how to wear a sari by following one of their videos.

Hey Whibley. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on this blog of mine too. I appreciate it. Cheers!

Keith said...

Hey Gingey. Thanks. I think it's important that men definitely know how to tie a tie. That's cool that your son could do it at such a young age.

Keith said...

Hey Carrie. Thanks so much. I appreciate that. I thought it would be something worthwhile to post on. I really wanted to post a clip on tying a bow tie.

Keith said...

Hey Laurel. Thanks. I really appreciate that. I definitely want to help out others who might not do that well with tying a tie. It's something everybody should know how to do.

Keith said...

Hey Cathy. Thanks. Glad you agree that this is something important for men to know how to do.

Hey Gabbi. Thanks. Oh yeah. You know that pic is not of Dino. That's Cary Grant. I'm enjoying my Sunday. Hope you are too. Cheers!

Hello Alexander. Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it. I will definitely check out your link. It is important that men know how to tie a tie. Many don't know these days. We do live in an era where people dress down. The half windsor is the one that I've tied the most. Take care. Have a great week ahead.

Keith said...

Hey Marian. Thanks. Glad you enjoyed this post. I love the Art of Manliness site. It's one of my favorites out there. I've learned so much from it. It is sad that men aren't taught a lot of the proper things they should know. We live in an era where it's not considered necessary.

Keith said...

Hey T.L. Thanks for commenting. There are a lot of guys today who don't know. I guess when it's something you rarely have to do then it's not considered vital info to have. I want to try the Italian one myself. Gotta love those Italians.

Keith said...

Hey Housewife. Thanks. There are so many great videos out there on youtube. I'm glad it's around. I think it's great that British kids wear a uniform with a tie. That gives them great incentive to learn how to tie a tie. It's a shame that so many people today, because of what they do or they just don't care anymore, never learn how to tie a tie.

Sometimes I get a little rusty with the double windsor and have to peek at a video. Unless you're tall and thin, the double is the way to go for anything but the most casual occasion. Though even Cary Grant could pull one off. Young Sinatra would opt for the single or four-in, I imagine.o

Hey Amy. Thanks. Glad you got something out of this post.

Hey Tommy. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it. I enjoyed putting this post together. I want to learn more knots than I know. I've never used too many. It is neat now to see what particular knots different guys are using.

Neck tie - yes, bow tie - no; in terms of knowing how to tie. There does seem to be less ties around these days. We wore clip-ons when we were kids.

Keith said...

Hey Jim. Thanks. Yeah, when I was a kid that's what we wore. I even knew plenty of grown men who wore clip-ons. I was probably in jr. high before I wore a real tie.

I always thought I was doing a half-windsor, but I'm doing a four-in-hand! When I was in college and anyone on the floor needed to go to a funeral or wedding, they always had to borrow not only a tie, but shoes and sometimes dress slacks and shirt as well.

Keith said...

Hey Robert. Thanks for commenting. I guess you learned something here today. I know a lot of guys that have no dress clothes at all. Their wardrobes consist of jeans, t-shirts, a few polo shirts & some khakis. That's it.

Great post. Learnt how to sort a tie when I was at school (one of the few things I was good at). Have to wear a tie at work and, to be honest, I'd rather take a beating than have to wear one. Absolutely hate 'em.

Hey Keith, I love that posting very much! I've used the same description how to tie a necktie for doing mine :) I've used them for business sometimes, hehe.
I was able to teach my big brother how to do correctly :-D YAY!

Hey Veronica. Thanks. I definitely think it's important for men to know how to tie a tie. Plus men should try to find more occasions to wear one.

Hey Sofie. Thanks. Glad you stopped by and commented. That's cool that you taught your big bro how to tie a tie. My dad was the main one who taught me. It's definitely important for a guy to know how.

Hey Kristin. Thanks. I hope my post has given you enough information to know how now.

Keith said...

Hey Clare. Thanks. I've got a friend who wears a bow tie a lot. He looks very cool in them. Yeah, it is cool for a girl to know how to tie a tie herself. I would find it sexy to have a girl tie my tie for me.

That is fabulous, Keith! I feel like I should learn how to tie a tie as well...just in case J doesn't know how =) But it is definitely a good skill to learn - I love when a man wears a tie!

Keith said...

Hey Allison. Thanks. Glad you enjoyed this post. I think it's important for both genders to know how. It would be cool if you learned how. Hope your week started off well. Cheers!

Let me just say that as a woman, there are few things more attractive for a man to wear than a well-tied tie (with the width of the tie and the size of the know being proportional to a gent's stature) and a crisp, pressed button-up shirt. Throw in a perfectly tailored two or three piece suit and you're positively golden in my books! :)

Keith said...

Hey Jessica. Thanks for sharing that. I totally understand what you mean. I'm very impressed by a well dress man.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being "not so great" at tying ties. I'm on the same boat but I still wear ties generally on the daily even though it's not required. Men should not only know how to tie a tie but know which ones are outdated as well. I'm sick of those 90's prints

Keith said...

Hey JFK. Thanks. I know what you mean. I'm just glad I know how to do it even if I'm not all that great at it. I do wanna get better. Yeah, it is important to know which ties are out of date. I've seen some guys with ties that are so out of style it's ridiculous.
